The Nigerian Institute of College Research and College of Medicine,Ibadan has been ordered by the Federal Government to carry out an appropriate study into claims of HIV cure in the country.
Prof. Isaacs Adewole, the Minister of
Health made this known on Monday in Ilorin during the meeting for the North Central Zone at the Federal Government Town Hall.
The claim to finding the cure of the dreaded virus was made by a Nigerian university don, Prof Maduike Ezeibe
When posed by questions on the stand of the government on the claims, the Minister was of the view that getting a cure to the virus will be
of health interest to the public
According to him,Nigeria has the second highest census of people infected with HIV numbering up to three million people infected with the virus trailing behind South Africa.
However,the minister made it known that there are globalized modalities recognised before disclosure of cure can be made known
He said “What we need to do is to make sure that things are done properly.
“The process to undertake is the animal experiment to be sure it is efficacious and safe before moving to human.
“At the appointed time when we have the results, we shall come public.”
According to Adewole, the government was close to achieving it's promise of making available 10,000 Primary Health Care (PHC) service centres to Nigerians.
Also, he made it known that the European Union is investing 650 PHC while 950 is funded by the British government.
Mr Adewole disclosed that the FCT Administration was strifing to replicate the Federal Government plan of PHC centre in the 225 wards in the territory.
